Alex Apol Huh? If that’s a pathetically disguised passive aggressive attempt at linking UBI and automation to Soviet Communism, you really should do your research on what it is and how and why it’s funded, and why it’s becoming part of the mainstream discussion. Otherwise, you’re really just making a complete fool of yourself. Furthermore, Universal Basic Income is different than Universal Basic Infrastructure, so before your feelings intuit another off-the-cuff reply, please do some research and provide something of substance rather than a thinly veiled quip, for I won’t waste my time, or anyone in this collection’s time, with uneducated trolls and will block you from the collection (Yes. Like Russia). Fear not, there are plenty other collections that will gladly entertain that sort of uninformed nonsense. (BTW…it’s the educated and informed people. They’re the ones that get past the headlines, and read not only the tag-lines, but full articles and supporting sources as well…)
The article never got to how this would be funded? Its great to say all of this, but without a viable funding plan then its just a pipe dream.
Steven Johnson The whole idea behind UBI is, as automation increases, to tax the robots (corporations that use them instead of human labor) as Elon Musk, Bill Gates, Google, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, all of them have advocated for. They all save money, everyone benefits. After all, they still need us to somehow have money (or at least crypto) to buy their stuff…
I don’t see it. In that case the robot is working as a human proxy, and you are earning the robots “income” as your “income” via taxation. And then the government will take out of that, you don’t earn at 100% of the rate of taxation , you wont earn what the robot pays in tax. It also eliminates incentive, whats the point of getting an education if you can’t get a job. Sounds like a world where the elites (the people you all listed) have all the power and all the control and they just hand out scraps to the plebs to keep them in line and complacent, doesn’t sound great. I don’t have an answer for what do we do when everything is run by machine, but this does not seem workable. It would be better to regulate away the ability of large corporations to use automation for production, and only allow robotics for personal use.
Steven Johnson Well, I’d recommend you researching it a bit more first. Number one, you’re not going to take away automation from the corporations. It’s too late. They’ve already begun, from Walmart to Foxconn to Ford to Amazon to Tesla. It only makes sense to them. It’s more efficient, it’s cheaper, it’s more sustainable, they don’t have to pay for a robot’s health insurance or a robot’s vacation pay, the robots can work 24/7, they don’t have to worry about unionization, etc. The education part comes in for the new job economies, which will (and already) centering around things like science, coding, computer programming, and, most important in the new economy, creativity and creative thinking skills, for as more and more robots begin taking over more and more (especially physical labor) jobs, they’ll still need someone to be able to tell them what to do and program them how to do it (for now). Furthermore, as the robots take over those jobs, UBI frees up the traditional worker to spend more time cultivating communities, more time raising their families, more time nurturing hobbies that can become new businesses, etc. Whether we like or agree with it or not, that’s the direction things are going. By some estimates, more than 40% of jobs in the U.S. alone will be automated by 2030. Heck, Walmart just started last week (https://goo.gl/ZSwcRF). Law firms are even beginning to hire robots (https://goo.gl/LKgpdR). Robots are beginning to perform surgeries. And soon, robots will be driving us around. They’re everywhere. And yes, the government will take out of that, but that’s where the UBI comes in, as we get that back in cash, incentives, services, and infrastructure. That’s the whole point. Again, they still need to ensure we have some sort of income so we can buy their stuff.
