3D printed skull model saves Australian baby whose nose was blocked with bone
“A 3D printed skull has helped an Australian infant survive a birth complication. Baby Sophia, from Perth, was born with bone fused over her nasal cavity, and could not breathe without a ventilator. Surgeons used a 3D printed model to get a better look at the skull before operating…”

SeaSoda – They’ll probably just make her a new one every few months, to adjust as she grows
That would mean they would have to do surgeries and put in new fake skulls as the child grew. So it’s fake.
#fakenews
SeaSoda – -Inevitable InkFeatherz!- What are you guys talking about? It’s not like they’re putting the 3D printed skull inside her; they’re not giving her a new skull. It literally says they made it so doctors could get a better look at the skull BEFORE operating, so they knew exactly what they were working with since it’s dangerous for a baby to get an x-rays.
They didn’t put the skull in, they just made a model
Read, idjits
SeaSoda – it’s a model…sorta like a road map…they will remove bone to open up the nasal passages
Wow
The comments on these posts are surreal
Y’all do realize she’ll need to get a new skull like, every year

Tible the UWU Where do you see that information?
Phenomenal what can be done with technology these days.
You people are jerks

I refuse to +1 this post for the simple fact the comments in said thread are moronic. I mean did anyone even read the op?

You do not have to text all of that
Jason Phelan If only people actually read these days… many are just looking for an outlet to project their ignorance. As the curator of the collection, I try to catch and block as many as I can, but some slip through the cracks every now and then. Thanks for actually reading past the headlines…
Awesome..
Jason Phelan Medical science has reached the point to where we can transfer human heads and be confident that it’ll work, replacing a skull ain’t far off
Sorry my baby

SeaSoda -: This skull was not made for implantation but for the doctors to be able to understand the precise shape of the original skull and play through different options of remedying the excess bone. Once the surgery is over, the skull copy is no longer needed — even if the girl lives long and her head grows big — and will presumedly be donated to a museum of medical oddities.

Hiii
Chesterson Jack: Well, the skull model was built after a CT scan, which is essentially dozens of x-rays at different angles. The purpose of doing it this way, I’d presume, is rather that when the doctors get to practice with a copy, they’ll be familiar with it during the surgery even though the patient’s skull is somewhat unusual, and the risk of making mistakes because they wouldn’t know what to expect is accordingly lower.
Jason Phelan: Significant parts of human skulls have been replaced surgically before. See <https://www.nbcnews.com/science/science-news/medical-first-3-d-printed-skull-successfully-implanted-woman-n65576>, for an example.

OMG! TOO CREAPY POOR BABY
Thom Karba Please read the article. It’s not in her head. They used it to practice the surgery. Thanks.
Thom Karba How did it start off dumb?
Thom Karba Not sure what you mean. Please explain it to me. This is about 3d printing being used to print a replica of a difficult skull to operate on, so the surgeons can practice before they perform the operation on the living human baby. It saved the baby’s life. That is what this story is about. I’m not quite sure what you thought it was about? Help me understand.
Thom Karba Dude, are you reading anything here!?? THE 3D PRINTED SKULL IS NOT INSIDE THE BABY’S HEAD!! NO ONE IS REPLACING ANYTHING. They only used the 3D printed skull to PRACTICE the surgery before they did it on the real skull. It’s NOT INSIDE the baby’s head. Are you not understanding this? This is what happens when you rely on a headline and don’t read the actual article, you make yourself look like a fool. I’m trying to help you here man. Know what you’re talking about before you start vomiting your own thoughts based on NOTHING that the article is about.
Thom Karba Please tell me you’re just trolling me now – at least that’s an excuse I can accept, because otherwise, it might be your skull that someone needs to do surgery on.
Thom Karba Ha! Ok. In that case, I apologize for making fun of you.
Thom Karba the skull is not being replaced
