Is this the first ‘digital’ country?
“Why, in 2017, the year of cashless payments and fingerprint-locked gadgets and handheld video-chatting, can we not do all of our government-related tasks online, in one place and in one fell swoop?
In a certain Baltic country, you can: Estonia, the small nation of 1.3m nestled in the nooks of northeastern Europe…”

No, we cannot do all of our government-related tasks online. Given how small Estonia is to most other countries, they are probably largely overlooked by most cyber-criminals, which works in their favor. If you look at countries that are large and/or high-profile and/or low cyber-security (Russia, China, US, India, UK, Indonesia, etc) you will see many more cyber-attacks, both domestic and international.
Also, your universal basic income hashtag is a joke. People have different living conditions, which dictate the amount they can live off of, and trying to give someone in, say, the UK the same living amount as someone from Mali will result in the brit starving and homeless because the cost of living is much higher. Even costs to live in a city flat could be enough to break the bank for rural people living a few miles away.
Joseph Stanavage What’s a joke is your understanding of UBI, for apparently you haven’t done your research. ‘Universal’ doesn’t mean it’s the same amount across the board, it’s dictated by cost of living in each area/economy it’s tested in or used in. Top economists and tech leaders and government officials around the globe advocating for it and you don’t think those factors, especially cost of living, has been taken into consideration? I mean…really? C’mon man.
And about the computer thing, when you fill shit out for the government on paper, where do you think they input it once you give them the paper? Eh…a computer…so it’s basically just cutting out the middle man and using #blockchain to keep it secure. And please, for the love of god, research what blockchain is before you come back with another half-witted uneducated reply.
Wasim Muklashy If it is not the same across the board, then it cannot be called “Universal”, now can it?
And for blockchains, even they are not entirely secure. Virtual wallets, old wallets, Sybil attacks, DDoS-ing, and data bottle-necking to fight DoS attacks are all vulnerabilities, not to mention trying to stay anonymous while simultaneously proving transaction. On a government scale, with millions (if not billions) of people proving citizenship for stuff like healthcare and SS, attacks are not unthinkable.
